To Sing or Not To Sing?

American Idol, The Voice, and X-Factor are very influential shows amongst our nation. We see people with remarkable talent singing in front of thousands of people in hopes that they become the next big star. Of course people with natural singing talent are great at these shows, but what about those who do not sing very well. There needs to be a show for that awful musical monster at the karaoke bar, or the free-style friend that forgets the words to the song. What about the girl who’s voice sounds like nails on a chalk board? These unfortunate musically challenged people attend sports games all the time right?

While working for the Houston Astros the DJ would play a variety of songs to keep the fans involved during stale parts of the game. Another part of our entertainment show was to have in game competitions. In game competitions are minute max games that occur during inning breaks. So if you are familiar with the show Singing Bee, it takes the average person and combines karaoke with a spelling bee competition. My idea is to strategically mix the Singing Bee with a highly recognizable sponsor. Applebee’s is known to have karaoke on Tuesday and Thursday nights with promotional drinks, but  for some reason not many people attend.

Example: it is the top of the 9th inning and people are considering what to do afterwards. The host of the park randomly selects a lucky fan to participate in the Singing Bee. The DJ chooses a highly recognizable song and plays half of the chorus and pauses the song. The contestant must finish the lyrics of the song. If the contestant successfully sings the correct lyrics the fans receive a coupon for free chips and salsa.

Theoretically speaking, the idea allows people right after a ball game to grab a bite to eat, drink and sing with friends on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Applebee’s gets to advertise their karaoke nights at low cost to 30,000 plus fans a night.

Singing Bee in the Sports Industry could be a very exciting marketing tool for Applebee’s and the home team. So sing your heart out people and win your home team some chips and salsa.
